Waterbury Corning 8-day Walnut Parlor Clock c 1890
This Waterbury Corning 8-day Walnut Parlor Clock circa 1890 was acquired on
December 23, 2015 as a Christmas gift from a family member. The case has a very old
finish which could be original. The pendulum is nickel plated and appears to be
original. The paper face is probably original. The Waterbury brass movement is
labeled and has a Sept. 22, 1874 patent date but this clock's date of
manufacturer was likely around the 1890's. The door glass is original and the
design survives but is fragile. The tip of the minute hand was broken off and a
replacement tip was attached. I believe the hands may otherwise be original. The
original label is completely gone.
The door frame and a few places on the case needed to be reglued. The movement was
cleaned and given a complete set of pivot bushings for the strike and going trains.
The time side main spring was 3/4" x 0.012" x (unknown) and was rusted.
It was replaced with one 3/4" x 0.014" x 108". The strike side
spring was an obvious newer replacement measuring 3/4" x 0.018" x
(probably 96"). The strike spring was also replaced with a 3/4" x
0.014" x 108" spring, which seems to work OK but the strike seems a bit
slow. Perhaps a 0.016" might have been provided a faster strike. The movement
winds with a #5 key and is snug in a new key. The movement runs at 8277 BPH. The
original suspension feather was replaced with a two-part suspension spring. This
one is a part of my permanent collection.
