Waterbury Clifton walnut shelf clock with alarm, c. 1881
This is an eight day bell strike Waterbury Clifton walnut shelf clock with
alarm, circa 1881. It was given to me by a friend in March 2009. Although "in
pieces" and lacking a movement and dial when received, the case was complete
including the original glass and what is believed to be the original alarm and
bell. I "made" a replacement movement from parts of various other period
Waterbury brass movements. (This movement was not originally a pinned movement and
began life as a front mount mantel clock movement. I added the pinned posts and
back mounts.) The fancy pendulum has a rate indicator and although it is not
original and differs from catalog illustrations of the Clifton, it is
attractive and seems appropriate for a clock from this period. The dial is a new
"print" on an old dial pan from the same time period. I believe this
model was made in both alarm and non-alarm models. I've also found another
example on line with a slightly different glass pattern and a similar regulator
pendulum.
