E. Ingraham Berling 8-day Gothic Shelf Clock, circa 1918
This is a E. Ingraham 8-day time and strike shelf clock. Strikes the hour on a nice coiled gong and the half-hour on a steel bell. The brass movement is typical Ingraham from this period. It has a half-deadbeat escapement on the front side of the movement and a count wheel strike. There is a cutout in the bottom of the case to allow the pendulum bob to be installed. The front mounted escapement is inconvenient to install the pendulum bob, and the hands and face must be removed to adjust the escapement. The back of the case has a slide in cover.
I acquired this clock on May 10, 2010 at a local estate auction. The case had been stripped and rather poorly refinished. The base wood appears to be Poplar which is not best wood to take a fine finish. The case was stained and shellacked. The movement required some pivot and bushing work. Note the pivot support plate soldered to the escape wheel bridge. That was replaced with a proper brass bushing. The pendulum bob was missing and replaced with a reproduction Ingraham bob. The face, hands, and other parts appear to be original except possibly the door hinge. The clock runs nicely and although it's not a museum piece, it is a decent little clock from this period.
