Westclox Big Ben Loud Alarm black face alarm clock 1936
Westclox Big Ben Loud Alarm with black face luminous dial. Purchased on eBay
as part of a lot of three alarm clocks being sold for parts or restoration - all
non-working. The clock is missing the "pull to alarm" knob and has a few
scuffs but generally not bad looking. The luminous material on the hands had turned
dark and is coming off. (Radium dial?) Most of the luminous material was gone from
the numbers as well. The brass main spring click spring was broken so the clock
could not be wound.
The clock was disassembled and cleaned, time side pivot holes bushed, time side
main spring replaced, and a substitute click spring installed next to the original.
Its not pretty but but it works well. Replacing the click spring with an original
type is quite involved on these. The remaining old luminous material was removed
and the hands and numerals recoated with Bergeon luminous "paste" sold
for this purpose for more $ than I paid for the clock. I really wanted an old alarm
that I could see in the dark for my main bedroom clock. It seems to be running
strong and dead on 15,000 BPH. Not a valuable piece but a good working clock with a
loud alarm to get me out of bed in the morning.
