Bausse French Barrel-top Portico clock, circa 1804-1825
This is an interesting and somewhat elusive French portico style clock with a
barrel top. The dial is signed "Bausse au Méridien" and
"Boulevard D'Antin". The maker would seem to be Pierre Guillaume
Bausse who was likely located on the at the (Prime) Meridian in Paris. The time
period would be about 1804-1825. The clock has a large brass movement with
count-wheel strike on a bell. It has a simple anchor (recoil) escapement and a
knife-edge pendulum suspension. The pendulum is uncompensated. It has been pointed
out that French clocks from this period typically have temperature compensating
"grid iron" pendulums, which this clock lacks, opening the possibility
that the pendulum may not be original, or the clock may simply be atypical,
intended for a different market, or from a different period.
This has been a most interesting clock to research. Many thanks to all the NAWCC
members who assisted. The clock is in good running condition and just came in for
routine service, but hardly a routine clock!
