Ansonia Black iron mantel or shelf clock - unknown model
This clock was acquired at a local estate auction on July 31, 2006. It stands about
13 inches tall and has a 5 inch round pressed brass face with black numerals. The
clock has an 8-day brass movement and strikes on the hour and the half. Signed
"Ansonia Clock Co., USA, New York". There is a patent date of June 18,
1882 on the main plate, and a patent date of April 13, 1886 on the fast-slow
regulating mechanism. The case and feet have been refinished. The pendulum is the
correct type but may be a replacement, I believe that everything else is probably
original.
I have been unable to find the correct model name for this clock. I have been told
that it originally had additional fancy trim decorations which are missing. The
case does indeed have several filled in holes (visible from the inside) that were
likely for mounting additional fancy work. Ansonia is noted for its fine decorative
castings. I suspect a previous owner probably removed the castings opting for
decorations that were a bit less "intense". Although not original in
appearance, it is a very handsome clock in its current state of dress. It may have
looked similar to this when it began life.

The clock runs well and keeps good time. It has a wonderful sounding strike on a
flat wire gong. The clicks, springs, wheels, etc. all look to be in very good
condition. One pivot bushing on the strike train has some wear but not enough to
affect the operation of the clock.
